In 1983, a young Mark Minervini walked into a local library and picked up Richard Love’s book Superperformance Stocks. While much of the book explored the relationship between politics and the stock market, it was Chapter 7 that captured Mark’s imagination. That chapter highlighted Love’s study of stocks from 1962 to 1976 that had soared 300% or more within two years without suffering a correction greater than 25%. Love called these rare winners Superperformance Stocks.

For Mark, Richard Loves’s book was a revelation. The notion that the market consistently rewarded repeatable patterns and characteristics set the foundation for what would ultimately become his SEPA® methodology—a strategy that would later define his championship career and inspire traders worldwide.

Love’s insights planted the seed, but Mark’s vision crystallized further after reading The Anatomy of a Stock Market Winner, published in the March/April 1988 issue of the Financial Analyst Journal. In this article, Mark R. Reinganum analyzed 222 top-performing stocks that each gained at least 100% in a single year between 1970 and 1983. Reinganum’s findings reinforced Love’s earlier conclusions and strengthened Mark’s conviction in Reverse Factor Modeling.

The central theme in both studies resonated deeply: to discover tomorrow’s market leaders, you must thoroughly understand the traits of yesterday’s biggest winners. This idea—“Study the best to find the best”—became Mark’s guiding philosophy. It set him on the path to mastering the forces that drive dramatic price advances, eventually forming the core of his SEPA® methodology and the development of the Leadership Profile.
